A Black Belt is Just a Belt
If you’re thinking about starting in martial arts and have your heart set on tying that black belt around your waist one day, here’s something to keep in mind. It’s just a belt. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great symbol of your accomplishments up to that point, but understand that it’s only the beginning. Popular opinion is that a black belt, or a even a sash, puts you in line to be the next Bruce Lee. Unfortunately, if that is your goal, then it’s time to adjust your sights.
The black belt ranking system didn’t gain a lot of popularity until the early 19th century. Then, it was more of a convenient indicator that you reached the first level of competence on your way to living a real martial arts life. Think of it as getting your high school diploma. Once you’ve done that, you’re far from completing your education. Whether it’s at a university or the school of life, you at least know that you learned how to learn.
What this also means, is that you don’t have to judge yourself by what you wear around your waist. It’s really about sticking to your training and building what’s really important about a martial art within yourself. Confidence, health, coordination and teamwork are the real indicators of what you gain. As a beginning student, you’re gonna need a lot of help. That’s just how it’s going to be. As a black belt, you’ll have reached a point where you can help those with their training when they need it. Now there is a real goal for you.
What it all comes down to is, a martial artist understands the bigger picture. Practice, practice and more practice. When you enter the dojo for the first time, just know that you’re not there for a green, yellow, orange or black belt. You’re there to achieve something for yourself that’ll carry you through your life in the dojo and beyond.
The belt is pretty useful for keeping your training gi closed, though.
