Martial Arts is for The Spirit Enabled

Who can practice martial arts? Probably more than you first think. Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices created for exercise, self-defense, spiritual growth, or all three. What doesn’t usually jump to mind as part of martial arts is the practitioners who may not walk, who may have limited mobility or otherwise can’t practice the same techniques as most. Having a physical disability, though, is far from a disqualifier of living the martial arts lifestyle.

Around the world there are many schools willing to teach and adapt for students who wish to start their own journey towards a black belt or other advanced ranking. For some students, like Paul Brailer of Ohio, a martial art can open a world that they may not have known existed for them. For Paul, the martial art was taekwondo and the world was a black belt and even starting his own non-profit to help teach self defense to others with disabilities. Being able to show the world that using a wheelchair won’t stop you from defending yourself can be a point of pride that helps get someone through some tough times.

Is it easy? Well, not always. Then again, the same can be said for anyone. Martial arts is about dedication and a willingness to learn. As long as you have the right mindset and spirit to take it to the next level, then martial arts can be in your future.

Unfortunately, not all places will have the best teachers who can help with your particular disability, but don’t let that stop you. Ask around or call a few places that practice what you’re looking for, and you may be surprised.
